International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (founded in 1909), known as IVR from its initials in German, is a learned society.
It holds an international conference every two years.[1] In 1989, the government of China forced Chinese academics who had been planning to attend the conference not to attend, in the wake of international criticism over the imposition of martial law.[2]
Many notable academics have served as president of the association, including Neil MacCormick[3] of Edinburgh University and Gray L. Dorsey of Washington University.[4]
The IVR is made up of several autonomous national associations. In 1968, Iridell Jenkins of the University of Alabama was elected president of the IVR's United States section.[5]
